2015-2019 is a very specific yet very dope period of time for tag team wrestling. To the readers that aren’t wrestling fans, don’t leave. Take this opportunity to YouTube some really good stuff. Professional wrestling is like those anime fight scenes, but in real life. The New Day, The Usos, The Wyatt Family, The Street Profits, Bayley & Sasha Banks, The Viking Raiders and The Undisputed ERA are some names of tag teams that may come to mind. If New Day somehow did not come to mind, eat your Booty O’s.
The Survivor Series 2014 main event set a high bar for tag team wrestling to follow. Nonetheless, WWE continued to deliver in that region. They didn't just set the bar, they were the bar! Sheamus and Cesaro did that. Don't sue me now.
2015
Some may consider Kalisto of the Lucha Dragons doing his finisher off a ladder to be a 2015 highlight. Considering the risk of the move, others may disagree. Shoutout to Kalisto, his WWE run was tough.
There was a 16-Man match that included Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, The Usos, The League of Nations, The Wyatt Family, and “Team ECW”. Another cool match was the first ever tag team Elimination Chamber Match. Comment on this blog if you remember either. If you do drop a comment, I might even go as far as to like your comment (as a fellow old head).
2016
2016 saw some interesting matchups, like when Roman Reigns and Sasha Banks faced Rusev and Charlotte in a mixed tag team match.
That year’s Survivor Series 5-on-5 match was silly. I just ran that one back how tough it was. Another large head count match took place on July 4th. It was “Team U.S.A.” against “The Multinational Alliance” in a 16-Man elimination tag team match. Kevin Owens lost twice on that day, both match-wise and in the form of a pie to the face. Who pie’d him? The question remains.
2017
The 2017 SummerSlam Kickoff saw an unbelievable match between the Usos and New Day. The two teams also faced each other at that year’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event. Another dope Survivor Series 5-on-5 took place in 2017. The whole roster attacking roster trope really had slightly-younger me at the edge of my seat.
The Hardy Boyz returned and won the titles at WrestleMania 33. Enzo & Cass were among the losers of that title match. While the team made their Raw debut in 2016, we saw them dispart approximately one year later. They somehow ended their WWE run with no championship history. That breakup storyline was moving like an 18 year old that did good on the SAT. Also broken up was #DIY, but they reunited later on.
2018
Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre are two WWE greats, and they teamed up in 2018. Their finisher was cold though. Another interesting team was Braun Strowman and fourth grader Nicholas. Braun Strowman was set to choose a surprise partner at WrestleMania 34. I remember on two separate nights, I had two separate dreams about who Braun Strowman would choose, and neither of them were Nicholas. I would really fall asleep and have dreams of wrestling. I was invested with no financial return.
The Deleters of Worlds existed, a team composed of Bray Wyatt and Matt Hardy. May Bray Wyatt rest in peace.
2019
In 2019, the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships were revealed. Bayley & Sasha Banks won those belts at that year's Elimination Chamber. Another team that held gold in 2019 was Rollins & Strowman. For those unfamiliar with wrestling, think of this team like Iron Man and Hulk.
I keep mentioning Survivor Series, but I felt the absolute need to address not only the NXT vs. Raw vs. SmackDown Survivor Series Elimination Match, but the build up. I mentioned brands attacking brands, and on November 22nd of 2019, NXT wasn't shy of doing just that. They came to SmackDown with a Jeep, and the shot was cold . On the topic of 2019 NXT, Team Ciampa vs. The Undisputed ERA at NXT TakeOver: WarGames 2019 was unbelievable. Pretend that this upcoming pic is in 4K for me.
Recap
The aforementioned five years saw pro-wrestling greatness, and I am so happy that I was able to see a lot of those moments the night of. The tag team sector just went ham.
